BOOK PRESENTATION THE ART OF TANGO – BÁRBARA VARASSI PEGA

Piano students of all levels show an increasing interest in popular music repertoires. Tango music – captivating musicians and audiences worldwide– is no exception to this, mainly through the work of renowned Astor Piazzolla and several famous tango pieces that have become universally known. In this online event by EPTA, I will present my recently published book The Art of Tango and show some main aspects of tango piano performance together with bandoneonist Gerardo Agnese.

The Art of Tango is a systematic exploration of the performance, arrangement and composition of River Plate tango music, which has captivated musicians and audiences worldwide. The book discusses traditional practices, the De Caro school and the pioneering works of four celebrated innovators: Osvaldo Pugliese, Horacio Salgán, Astor Piazzolla and Gustavo Beytelmann. Three of them pianists and one bandoneonist, they were all arrangers, composers, performers and band leaders all-in-one.

The volume and its companion website with audio-visual materials analyse, decode, compare and discuss literature, scores and recordings, combining the study of oral traditions and written sources to provide a deeper understanding of tango’s artistic concepts, characteristics and techniques. Tango is explored through the lens of artistic research: in addition to a detailed examination of the various approaches to tango by the musicians featured in this book, I also discuss three of my own compositions embodying creative applications of the research findings. The Art of Tango is a unique source offering numerous tools for developing skills in practice, inspiring new musical output and the continuation of research for everyone with an interest in tango, whether they be composers, performers, arrangers, teachers, music lovers or scholars in the field of popular music studies.
